About Course

This course provides an in-depth overview of Functional Communication Training (FCT) as a strategy to replace problem behavior with effective communication. Topics include identifying the functions of problem behavior, Differential and Non-Contingent Reinforcement (NCR), Functional Communication Responses (FCR), and strategies for selecting and strengthening FCRs. Participants will also learn the difference between topography- and selection-based responses, the criteria for selecting or teaching novel FCRs, and the role of extinction in FCT. The course emphasizes practical, evidence-based techniques for implementing and maintaining FCT programs effectively.

What Will You Learn?

  • Identify the functions of problem behavior and their role in guiding intervention strategies.
  • Understand the types of Differential Reinforcement and their application in behavior interventions.
  • Define Functional Communication Training (FCT) and its importance in replacing problem behavior with functional communication.
  • Explain Non-Contingent Reinforcement (NCR) and its role in managing behavior.
  • Describe what a Functional Communication Response (FCR) looks like and how it is used in FCT.
  • Differentiate between topography-based and selection-based responses in communication.
  • Learn how to select an appropriate FCR based on the individual needs of the learner.
  • Understand the criteria for choosing an FCR that matches the function of the problem behavior.
  • Discuss the importance of teaching a novel FCR when necessary to ensure effective communication.
  • Explore evidence-based strategies to strengthen and maintain the FCR over time.
  • Analyze whether FCT can be implemented effectively without extinction procedures.
  • Review research on the implementation and maintenance of FCT interventions.
